Welcome to The Maysville Voice, the newsletter for those who reside and vote in the Maysville District in Buckingham County. I am pleased to bring you much information, links, and resources to inform and engage with you as your County Supervisor.

Some topics we will be considering or hearing about during our meeting on this Monday include: A presentation of a resolution honoring and memorizing the late Dwight Christian; a public hearing regarding amending the County Water Ordinance to increase the residential water connection rate; a public hearing regarding a Zoning Text Amendment and Special Use Permit at 59 Gold Hill Elementary School Road in New Canton regarding a private recreational facility; introduction of a Special Use Permit for a 199’ monopole cell tower on Holland Road; and consideration of setting a more affordable and equitable rental rates for nonprofits who wish to use the County Community Center.

We will also be discussing VDOT matters (I always welcome your roadway issues), a potential appointment/reappointment to the Industrial Development Authority, and consideration of $175,000 in grant funds toward our EMS Department.

For months, I have been advocating for our local nonprofit organizations and entities that should be able to use and Community Center for less money than out-of-town organizations. The time is now for the Board to approve the new, lower rates.

As for the proposed increase for residential connections, the last time we changed the rates was 2002. As a member of the Utilities Committee, I support this increase in connection fees. The cost of doing business since 2002 has increased substantially, and since then, our water users have been getting a great deal on new water connections—and they still will under the new rate. While we are not trying to make money on new connection fees, we do not want to lose money for connections. It is the recommendation from the Utilities Committee to increase the sewer and water connection fees to $3,000 per residential connections, and this is a reasonable fee, which is one-time for new connections.

Our upcoming Board of Supervisors regular meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, July 10, 2023 in the Peter Francisco Board Room in the County Administration Complex on Route 60. I encourage you to attend to learn more about your County Government and how your tax dollars are spent.
