Welcome to The Maysville Voice, the newsletter for those who reside and vote in the Maysville District in Buckingham County. I am pleased to bring you much information, links, and resources to inform and engage with you as your County Supervisor.
Some topics we will be considering or hearing about during our meeting on Monday include: A zoning introduction regarding a 199-foot monopole cell phone tower in the Axtell community; a public hearing to modify the Tax Stabilization for the Elderly and Disabled Ordinance (increasing the dollar amounts of assets and incomes as to enable more people to become eligible for relief); several presentations in honor and in memoriam (Varsity Baseball team, the late Jane Poulter, the late Rebecca H. Bowling, and honoring Lena Patton); consideration of changes to the Solar Policy, potential pay raises for School Bus Drivers; and much more.
We will also be discussing VDOT matters (I always welcome your roadway issues). Please contact me regarding any of these topics before the meeting.
Our upcoming Board of Supervisors regular meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 11, 2023 in the Peter Francisco Board Room in the County Administration Complex on Route 60. I encourage you to attend to learn more about your County Government and how your tax dollars are spent. If you’re unable to attend in person, you can view our meeting live here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfIL3rVTUEqgxBwXCQoBDTA.

In Other News Around the County

- On Monday, we observe the 22nd anniversary of the 9/11/01 (also known as Patriot Day) attacks on our nation’s soil—events that impacted each of our lives in different ways. The Student Government Association of Buckingham County High School will be honoring those who give back in the community in light of this anniversary during a ceremony on Monday morning.
- I have been asked to keynote the 50th Anniversary Gala for Crossroads Community Services Board this Saturday evening. This event will mark the culmination of 50 years of creating support systems for those who deal with mental health, substance use, developmental disorders, and intellectual disorders. Crossroads CSB’s leadership team and great, hardworking staff help so many on a daily basis in removing the stigmas that come with these matters. I am proud to represent Buckingham County on this Board, alongside my neighbor, Carter Allen.
- The Buckingham Chamber of Commerce recently held its annual Photo Contest, with many great photos submitted and many great photos earning awards! We have some great photographer in our county. See more photos and follow the Chamber here: https://www.facebook.com/chambercharlie12/. The Chamber of Commerce celebrates our community and our businesses in our monthly meetings, awards, events, and more! Join for only $40 per year by calling 434-983-2372.

- Troublesome Creek Medicine, owned and operated by Chris Hucks, who resides in the Maysville District, recently was awarded the Buckingham Chamber of Commerce’s Business of the Month Award! Hucks’ business is wildly popular, and I am glad he is following his passion of creating healthier communities across the county! Congratulations to Chris and his staff and family.

- There will be a sculpture dedication at the Buckingham County Public Library entrance for the new sculpture on Sunday, Sept. 17 at 2-4 pm. Please try to attend.
- The new speed readers on the East and West ends of the Courthouse Village are most certainly making a difference. I drive in the village and jog the sidewalks daily and I have seen that motorists are going slower and following the 35 MPH speed limit.
Endorsing Paul Garrett for the Maysville District Supervisor
As you know, I have previously announced that I will not seek re-election this year due to new opportunities that have been afforded to me. This means that someone new must run for election for the Maysville District seat in Central Buckingham, one that deserves the best representation for not only the district, but on the Board of Supervisors.
Paul Garrett, who is running as an Independent—not a Democrat nor a Republican—is running, and I fully endorse him. Paul, a former longtime public school teacher and an avid hunter and fisherman, lives on Troublesome Creek Road, and has lived in Buckingham his entire life. Being a former educator, he understands the needs of our schools and what it takes to prepare our youth for a successful livelihood as they build their lives here. Investing in public schools are of the utmost importance to Paul, and that is the paramount reason I ran for public office. I have known Paul for many years and he is the best candidate to serve you and your families in the Maysville District. Paul will represent you in the same manner I have with constant constituent engagement, knocking on your door, writing you, following up with you, calling your telephone, and being YOUR VOICE on the Buckingham County Board of Supervisors. Paul understands the importance of constituent relations, investing in public education, law enforcement, public infrastructure, economic development, working with VDOT for your roads, and, most importantly, working with his fellow County Supervisors to seek compromise and see good things happen for Buckingham County. Early voting begins soon, and please considering voting for Paul Garrett for Maysville District Supervisor. You will be hearing from him and myself soon!
